PERSONAL INFORMATION
Image:
Appearance: Emilio is a fairly tall individual, standing around 5'10". He weighs 160 lbs. He possesses several traits revealing him as a dhampir. While both his eyes are matched, being a steely gray color, his hair his mismatched. Silver and black hair are mixed in with one another, with silver being slightly more predominant. His hair is somewhat shaggy and goes down to his ears. He can occasionally be bothered to trim it lightly himself just to keep it from being a nuisance, but no one would ever mistake it for a professional job. His skin is also exceptionally pale. Emilio keep himself fairly covered up. The shadow of the brim of a somewhat tattered brown triangular hat covers his eyes. The hat is notably adorned with a garnet brooch, the only thing that stands out from his dress and intended to draw attention away from his face. His face is usually covered with a gray and black striped scarf. He also wears a brown oilskin drovers coat, buttoned down to his waste but no further. He wears black gloves made of a fairly supple and sturdy deerskin, with khaki pants and a pair of black wellington boots. All of Emilio's clothing has been fireproofed in case of rebounding spell, except for his pants.
Personality: Emilio isn't exactly anti-social, he just doesn't really do people. A history of being largely reclusive and sectioned off from other people has left him with very little social skills that other people might have. He's rather benign and spends most of his free time doing conventional things such as reading, practicing his combat skills (when he has the space to do so), or housework. He's also extremely quiet and perfectly at home sitting alone on a bench somewhere, just twiddling his thumbs and maybe thinking a little. He doesn't think particularly dark or brooding thoughts, in spite of his history. Mostly just pondering small things that pop into his head, of which there are many due to a fairly active imagination and spending a wee bit too much time inside his own head. He's very reserved and fairly laid back in being reserved. He's very hard to annoy or bother to the extent of him doing anything more than gently nudging the annoyance away until it stops annoying him,
This isn't to say Emilio doesn't like spending time with other people, he just typically doesn't actively seek out company and his usual idea of spending time with people is simply sitting, listening to them, and saying very little himself. He usually just doesn't feel like he has all that much to communicate. He isn't terribly assertive and just finds it easier to go with the flow, giving him something of a drifting mentality that often gets him sidetracked when he isn't set on a specific mission. A simple run to the grocery store to get a pox of frozen pizza rolls might end up in a 3 hour adventure in which he returns not only with the pizza rolls, but several stray cats (which his landlord will inevitably make him drop off at the nearest shelter), and several books ranging in subject from cooking to a fantasy novel. Emilio has fairly eclectic tastes in books, and will read almost anything well written with wrapped interest. Even fantasy novels, which he's perfectly aware he basically lives, but nonetheless tends to find very interesting.
That said, this also tends to make Emilio an atrocious cook, as he becomes incapable of following anything more complex than the directions on a pizza rolls box without the entire situation rapidly snowballing out of control, until his pancakes turn into something unrecognizable that may or may not contain all the ingredients for a Bloody Mary. He tends to eat out a lot, or when he doesn't it's something simple he can stick into an oven and let cook, not giving him a chance to turn it into the culinary equivalent of a Lovecraftian abomination. A personal favorite of his is pizza rolls, which he tends to keep a lot of in stock. He also has a fondness for doughnuts stemming from his teacher's tendency to use them to reward him for well done work. It's usually fairly ill advised to come between Emilio and doughnuts. While usually very quiet and relaxed, preventing him obtaining or eating doughnuts will usually irk him just enough to actually take some action. He's somewhat sensitive about his appearance, which is why tends to cover up as much as he does.
History:
Emilio's family had been a somewhat respectable line of magcian's from Valencia. They weren't particularly influential, or a powerful family by any means, but they certainly weren't bottom of the barrel. They had a decent amount of wealth, were fairly good at their chosen craft of pyromancy, and had a good track record with keeping family secrets out of the hands of others.
Emilio was born was born out of deception. His parents had been promised to each other from a young age in an attempt to breed a better magus. They knew each other decently well, but not well enough for Emilio's mother to know when her betrothed had been bitten by a Tepes Vampire (who had been masquerading as a prostitute) on the day of their wedding. Emilio was this born a dhampir to the surprise of his mother and the feigned surprise of his father. This made things rocky with Emilio's extended family, who wanted an heir who could pass on the family genetics. His mother was passed over as an heir, not only because of Emilio, but because complications during the pregnancy ended up leaving her infertile.
Emilio's mother tried for several years to cope with a Dhampir son and a vampire husband. It was extremely challenging, especially after she eventually learned the truth regarding how her husband had become a vampire. It wasn't that the two were terribly close in the first place, but there was a definite sense of betrayal that permeated any conversation that the two had subsequently, which didn't exactly help with communication, especially when it got to the point where Emilio would have to run to one parent with a report of what the other had said when they refused to talk face to face. To complicate matters further, the two were so caught up in frosty relations with each other and issues coming up about how Emilio's father was sourcing his blood. His apparent previous relations with prostitutes and the fact that their disappearance may not be the most publicized thing in the world sort of placed Emilio's father in some doubt. Between all of this, Emilio was basically teaching himself pyromancy off of his mother's book while his parents argued about a number of things. His mother frequently drank (though never really got abusive) and his father tended to spend long nights out, frequently returning well after Emilio had gone to bed and causing him to be woken up by the subsequent arguments between his parents.
The multitude of issues facing the family finally came to a head when Emilio's father returned home one night in a state of frenzy, and attempted to attack his wife, who had been drinking at the time to attempt to work up the courage to confront him about where exactly the blood he fed off of was coming from while Emilio continued attempting to practice spells under her supervision. Emilio rushed to protect his mother only to be tossed aside, attempt a rebuttal by slinging a fireball aimed at his father, which did catch him (or at the very least, his clothes) on fire . . . as well as the rest of the house. Emilio was trapped under some burning wreckage, but was largely unharmed by the fire. His parents ended up not being so fortunate.
Emilio was eventually dug out of the wreckage by a teacher from the Metis Circle who had seen the fire as he was walking down the street and decided to be a good Samaritan about the whole issue, in spite of the 8 year old's obvious status as a Dhampir decided to take him under his wing, especially after what had happened was explained. It was obvious that the self teaching method hadn't worked too well and had ended up rather dangerous.
Emilio didn't have much time to grieve for his parents (not that he exactly had much reason to at that point) as he was quickly swept up into an apprenticeship of sorts with the more experienced magician. They didn't exactly have a father and son relationship. It was more like Emilio was on an apprenticeship in which he permanently stayed in his Master's home. Having already had a home life where he was largely ignored for the sake of arguing, he found himself oddly at home being largely ignored unless he needed something or he was practicing burning things with magic. The rest of his time was generally spent studying or reading. Emilio grew a fondness for doughnuts over time as his teacher would buy him them as a little pat on the back for work well done. Eventually, when Emilio was around 12, he was sent to the Metis Circle for more formal training and the possibility of finding further specialization as a magician.
At the Metis Circle, Emilio faced difficulties due to wasting the first 8 years of his magic education trying to burn things based off of instructions from books, with very little of the actual theory involved. Emilio understood the basics of how magic worked, but he was overall much more geared towards the practical end of the spectrum rather than the theoretical. For this reason his previous mentor suggested that he become an enforcer. He simply didn't have the mentality of an academic, though he showed a lot of creativity in terms of using rather simple spells. Thus, in addition to his magic, Emilio started training in weapons. He found himself fairly adept with both a spear and a sword and decided to take up practice in both. Of the various forms he tried, he found himself enjoying the partisan for trickier parrying work and the kriegsmesser for more up front and offensive tactics. He found himself enjoying nuance more with the spear than he did with the sword, but still enjoyed the sword as a method of finishing a fight. Eventually it was learned that he was specifically a Tepes Dhampir, which the Mage's guild found a particularly useful trait, especially once it was revealed he'd inherited a resistance to holy attacks. Combined with his pyromancy, Emilio came to be on the short list for eliminating vampires and church folk who bothered the guild, and as a bit of a reward for coming into his own as a mage, his mentor gifted him with his current weapons to use in his current tasks.
Emilio currently lives in a small, and somewhat cramped, but overall rather charming apartment in Barcelona.
