Ma'am listen. Don't worry we're on your side and we're here to help you, we just need cooperation from you and your friend alright?
The centaur spoke in a gentle and compassionate tone. Maintaining careful eye contact with the woman. It was important to be diplomatic right now in a situation that could potentially turn hostile. Walking in armed and ready to kill would make the potential youkai and this chick think they were coming in for a damn execution. We'll place nice Alright. We ain't gonna shoot her. With that Alistair would give a nod for Edwin to really put away his weapon. Relax. Hey Hey. Lets not go at each others throats right now. We got a mission in front of us to take care of.The centaur would say as a mediator between his two companions. As for my own name I am Alistair BraveHoof, of the BraveHoof Tribe, and I myself am a Ki-Artist. It is a pleasure to meet you Reika and I hope your friend feels the same way as well. like I said before, we aren't here to hurt you guys. We're just finding out what's going on and making sure your friend's safe. Before those damn racists come over here and try to hurt them.
Edwin don't worry. We got your back, We're a team for a reason you know. Edwin really did seem to be panicing, so he had to reassure him with whatever he knew he could say.Whenever your ready, We'll gladly see your friend.
Out of nowhere though, Alistair felt a killing intent, and would be instantly ready to face any threats whatsoever. This could be a trap for all they knew, a trap where one of them looked nice, and then suddenly people came in to kill them. Just like a damn action movie, But the bravehoof would not make any sudden movements. He would appear calm, docile and stalwart. While being on guard.

As one might expect, Edwin’s outburst just left poor Reika on edge – though the man himself would feel that whatever presence was intent upon him seemed to relent somewhat with the explanation. On the other hand, Katsumi’s explanation in their native tongue just seemed to make things even more tense – maybe it was the company, maybe it was her choice of language (Reika started blushing in the midst of her grumbling), or maybe it was just the bad situation as a whole. Alistair’s dialogue didn’t seem to make things worse, but things weren’t looking up either as Reika looked around wildly with a very worried expression on her face. But, with such introductions, Shinobu finally made her appearance – albeit with a groan of frustration, rather than a bang. ”Unbelievable… worse than the last two. Your manners are as admirable as your comradery, it seems. Couldn’t you at least treat my pet with respect? But I suppose it’s far too late to teach any apes like yourself some dignity, isn’t it?”The voice extended from above – definitely feminine, and definitely older than Reika; though her venom was far more palpable than her age. With nary a sound, a shadow would extend from the roof… a silhouette of a monstrosity danced around the moonlit edges of the room amongst the sparkling threads in the air; four legs, eight legs, twenty legs; dripping with venom, or rain, or something more abhorrent? And yet, with that shadow behind it all, what emerged from the darkness was a young lady… though she still seemed unreal, emerging like a ghost rather than a human. Reclining as if sitting on a chair upon a hammock of silk threads that would be invisible without the moonlight, the predator sneered at her guests down her nose. The young lady had pitch black hair in a classical hime-cut that ran all the way down to her ankles; alongside an old Japanese high school sailor uniform – black as night as well, befitting of her compatriot’s similar look. While she was certainly glamourous, it was perhaps better to say she was very old-school; at least by Katsumi’s standards given the other girl’s experience of her homeland. But, despite her human form, Shinobu simply looked… unsettling; not quite fitting a human look. Red, sharp eyes and gangly limbs that didn’t seem to quite fit her body made her appear more like a comic character than someone real; even by the post-Masquerade world’s standards. ”I don’t care for whomever the IACSB might think they are, but… the Martial Forest Coalition? You really are hunters, aren’t you?” mused Shinobu, eyeing the three with unsettling intensity; clearly measuring up her antagonists; ”I guess it’s ‘honourable’ to warn people before you kill them by your standards, but you seem awfully lazy about this. Wandering into a spider’s web… I could have killed you all by now, you know? So long as you’re in my den, you’re at a serious disadvantage. I’d like to give you the benefit of the doubt on your intentions, but…”Idly waving a hand, Shinobu gestured to something in amongst the ceiling’s tangled webs – a mass that stuck out amidst it all; although it would have been near-impossible to notice without her indication. ”Well, your compatriots weren’t so wise either. But, they didn’t knock either. Ah, don’t be mad, right? I can’t argue with a free meal. Ha, ha, ha!” jeered the Jorogumo spitefully, blatantly relishing the chance to be so vile. ”B-But, it’s not like that – they – it was self-defence!” blurted out Reika in turn, pleading with her eyes – while Shinobu just seemed annoyed by the interruption. ”…Whatever helps you sleep at night. Hm, but if you’re not here for a fight… what are you here for? You come barging into my home in the middle of the night and scare my dear pet halfway to death, and yet you plead that you’re friends?” mused Shinobu, seeming to eye the group with curiosity now – though that menacing atmosphere still hung alongside all the webs around the group. ”I don’t see why I shouldn’t just help myself to a three course meal here. Maybe I’ll consider letting two of you go if one of you gives up, huh? If you play a fun game to decide, I really will do it. Dinner and a show, ha ha ha! Yes, are you here to entertain me?”

It was already a tense enough situation, and the chills through Edwin's spine weren't stopping. Which of course meant it was a perfect opportunity for Katsumi to glare daggers at him. This was right about the time Edwin suddenly remembered, "Oh yeah, she can probably break me in half with her fingers alone...", which made things no more comfortable for the now rather stressed out young human. "S-shut it..." he muttered rather pathetically, and looked away - quite frankly, at this point, Katsumi was scaring him almost as much as whatever thing was staring them all down - and having two things to worry about, at this point, was just the terrible icing on this evening.
Meanwhile, while Katsumi started speaking Japanese (while he had no idea what she was saying, her tone didn't sound very endearing, which surprised Edwin very little), Alistair was doing his usual thing and trying to keep some peace - which Edwin wouldn't have minded, except for the fact even Alistair was against him holding onto his only means of defence, because everyone was worried he was being a bit mean. "Idiots, both of them..." Edwin grumpily thought to himself. What did he have to do to make his point, scream about how weak he was to everyone? Not like the centaur was throwing away his bow, either...
Still, the sound of the mysterious Shinobu groaning in frustration made him spin around to face the voice, his current woes with his two companions forgotten in an instant. He watched the black-haired woman descend on a throne of silk, looking at her cold eyes appraising them like...well, like a spider might appraise a few flies. Edwin had only the information that the TAMRD provided 3rd-class members with on the jorogumo, which was at best minimal, but it was an altogether different experience to actually see one in the flesh. Known for being some of the rarest types of Mystic Kind out there, Edwin had expected he'd meet one eventually in his career in the TAMRD, but never quite like this. Certainly he knew fighting this thing would be a terrible idea - he could see why many of the reports indicated people were terrified of them, yet at this point...she didn't seem that bad. In her position, Edwin would more than likely have already killed one of them just for the perceived insult so far, so that might have been something...maybe.
At least right now she didn't seem like she was going to immediately kill them all - perhaps to some extent held back by her 'pet', or perhaps she'd had her fill of killing for the while by the last group of whatever was hanging above them that Edwin was trying desperately to ignore. Either way, she certainly wasn't impressed with this ragtag group. Well, they'd just have to work to change that opinion. Edwin took in a breath, trying to calm his frenzied nerves, doing his best to ignore Shinobu's taunts (surprisingly a challenge considering he felt like he'd been taunted all bloody evening). "Christ, what is this, House of the Dead?" he rubbed his face with his palm and vaguely wondered if a jorogumo would get the arcade game reference - probably not, but if it was the only measure of superiority he had in this situation, he'd take it. "Look, lady, nobody's about to shoot anybody. I'm certainly not stupid enough to start a fight, and if either of these two idiots try it I'll shoot them myself, there's your goddamn entertainment." Edwin shrugged - it was obviously a bit of bravado, considering right now he didn't even want to face towards Katsumi, let alone shoot her, but Edwin hoped Katsumi didn't screw this up as much as vice versa, if with her over-confident machismo instead of his crippling paranoia.
"As for why you might want to not immediately eat us - well, first of all, I'm all string and bones, it wouldn't be worth the effort. Second of all, because it'd probably be more useful to actually listen to us. Word has it that the Church have figured out you're here, and they're going to be arriving here soon. I'm sure you don't care for the IACSB - half the time I don't either - but they want to shelter you from the Church, at least for a little while, and anything that pisses off those zealots is fine with me." Granted, he was leaving out the part of any questioning, but it might be wiser to not immediately mention that yet - she'd probably rather take the risk fighting with the Church than deal with any kind of supposed interrogation.

As I watched the Youkai come down, given her appearance and the silk everywhere I came to conclusion that she was a Jorogumo. I didn't know much about her kind besides that they were a race of spider people who tended to blend in to human populations for their own safety, but I could tell a few things about the woman from the way she dressed and acted. She was probably a bit older than she appeared, given the haircut and outfit she was wearing screamed Showa to me. She had to be at least 11 or 12 years older than me if that uniform was authentic. Either that or she had bad taste in clothing or was trying to make herself seem like some sort of distinguished noble. This made a lot of sense given her rather pompous entrance as well. Her tone of voice and her attitude just simply hit this point home even more given her rather anti-human mindset. I almost wanted to start a fight with this woman to knock her down a peg and show her that her confidence was stupidly misplaced, but I had a job to do and like hell I would let a bit of personal irritation with this haughty woman ruin my reputation and not get me hired by the IACSB again. They paid well and maybe next time they would be paying me to actually beat something up as a first choice instead of a last resort. It didn't help matters that she had already captured and presumably eaten two other people she considered hunters and seemed to think we were hunters because I was here. Well, that needed to be cleared up for sure. "Look, I'm not here to do any hunting. The IACSB just hired me on to help ensure the safety of their agents. Nothing more, nothing less. Though I do wonder who sent the people you have in those cocoons over there," I said, gesturing a thumb over to the two cocoons that the spider woman had mentioned. Perhaps the church had gotten here faster than we had thought and the woman had disposed of them already. If that was the case, there was no skin off my nose. The less of those crazy zealots there were in the world, the better off the world was at least in my opinion. When the pipsqueak responded to the spider woman, he responded in a matter that was more sensible than anything he had said for the rest of the mission, and was rather funny given how self depreciating it was. I decided to let him do the talking on this, after all I wasn't here to deal with that kind of thing. I had no power to bargain for the IACSB, I was just here to make sure that they didn't get themselves hurt and to help bring in the youkai if force became necessary. Deciding to make good on that, I kept myself alert and ready for combat as soon as it might break out, after all, the tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.

This was getting frustrating. Mistakes were Potentially made over here with how this was going down right now. Alistair did not hesitate to speak however. We're not Here to Hunt you. We're here to help you, we do not know who were those people though. I'm not here to harm you, and neither are the people with me either. What will it take for us to prove that?Like one of my companions over here is explaining as well, the Church is on their way here and frankly. THOSE, are the people who want you dead. As Alistair spoke, his Aura oozed out to all of those around him, Intending on activating it's passive effect of soothing everyone in the vincinity. It was worth a shot, as this was Alistair's aura's own passive unique effect. Let us help you, Please. We're only doing this for your own good, Nobody needs to die unnecessarily today. The Youkai having come down, he needed to handle the words rather carefully, as this was a situation that could escalate from bad to worse in a minute if nobody amongst his party was careful with their words.

Upon being met with only an entertaining reaction from Edwin, Shinobu seemed a bit peeved – but, she did seem to cool off all the same; arching forward on her makeshift throne as the group gave their case. ”The IACSB’s agents, huh…? Well, don’t you think it’s a bit late to be negotiating, then?” mused the lady, gesturing to her previous prey once again with a bitter smirk; although she didn’t really seem that aggressive now. ”They didn’t really have your manners, though… I’m not a fan of people who put my toys at gun-point as soon as they come in. I guess I can give you that much credit, but you’re still breathing so you’ve already got your reward for that, right?”
Sighing slightly in exasperation, Shinobu then suddenly perked up upon hearing Edwin’s lamentations. ”Ahahaha, that’s right! Yes, this would be a pretty incredible set-up for the House of the Dead, huh? Ah, well; you should listen up then; or you’ll suffer like G did!” Shinobu sung happily, only to be met with a snicker from her compatriot - ”You couldn’t even beat the first stage on your own, Shinobu…~”
Getting a bit huffy over her own partner’s mockery, the Jorogumo focussed her attention back on the matter at hand; although she definitely seemed like she was in a better mood now – it would appear Alistair’s aura had cooled her off a bit as well. ”So the Church are involved after all, hm? The other two said as much, but with rather more blatant ulterior motives… I’m not interested in working for the IACSB or that demon, so don’t waste my time with that garbage. But… I like your guff a lot, human.”
Finally dropping to the ground, the Jorogumo still stood a good ten or so metres away; standing on the room’s stage (of course) and walking over to sit with her legs over the edge of it. ”I’m listening, so… how about a game? If you win, I’ll come along quietly; so long as you’re not keen on betraying me. But if you lose… I’ll kill one of you. Uh… I dunno… hm.” mused Shinobu, glancing around the trio before eventually settling her finger on Edwin. ”I like that one, so I’ll make him mine. How’s that sound?”
”But, I’m a fair cop, hah; so if you just leave and say there was no one in here at all… I’ll let you all go. I can handle getting around the Church with Reika. That’d be a win for us, compared to having to play nice with any suits. After all, ‘nobody needs to die unnecessarily’, right horse-boy?” added the lady; standing up again as her eyes narrowed – back to being serious, it seemed. ”It’s do or die time now, right? How exciting… I don’t get to play with others much, so I really am curious as to what you choose…”[/font

"Of course. Of goddamn course."
It wasn't to any surprise of Edwin that this particular group was essentially the B-squad...or possibly somewhere later in the alphabet, judging by the human-shaped cocoons that he was trying very hard not to notice. Though if Shinobu was telling the truth in this entire affair, it seemed like she already had a pretty firm grasp on most of what was going on - and whatever idiots the IACSB had sent earlier apparently had decided to force the issue. If he got out alive, Edwin promised to include in the report a note to tell his superiors to 'stop making everything so much bloody harder'. This, of course, did not help the current situation in any way, but at least the thought of yelling at his bosses without getting immediately canned made him feel a little better.
In the meantime, the trouble was dealing with the current situation which was...wait, the jorogumo actually recognised House of the Dead? "Damn. Apparently the Mystic Kind are more awesome than I thought they were, at least sometimes." he thought to himself - though he had to quickly hide a smirk when he overheard Reika's gentle mocking of her partner.
Of course, things could never be easy, in true Melchiott fashion. There was apparently an option for getting through this without a fight, something that Edwin preferred greatly, but...then she kept talking. "A game...?" Though he showed no sign of it on his face, Edwin mentally grimaced. Her particular note to not mention what this game actually was made things even worse...especially after her words of killing one of the group. "Please not me please not me please not me please not...DAMMIT."
So what now? There was almost no way Edwin could possibly win against a freaking Mystic Kind - especially when he didn't even know the goddamn rules. How many stories had he read in which the protagonist made a deal with the devil only to get screwed at the very end? But what was the other option? Either increase his chances of getting killed immensely in an all-out battle, or walk back with his hands in his pockets and be damned to IT support for the IACSB for eternity, at best. The thought of it all was enraging. Somehow, knowing Katsumi was probably smugly smirking at Edwin's misfortune just made it all even worse.
Edwin grumbled under his breath and then looked up. There was only one real choice, as frustrating and dangerous a choice as it was. "You know what? Fine. Why not? It won't be the first time I've put my life on the line, not even today." Of course, Edwin was being naive enough to assume that he could win, but it was either that or go home empty-handed, and Edwin wasn't quite sure which was worse...yet.
He just hoped he'd live to regret his decision.

It seemed that the Jorugumo had cooled off a bit, and the reference Edwin made even made her laugh. Well it looked like he was good for something at least. Though it did seem like the IACSB wasn't totally upfront with us when they sent us on this mission, it seemed they had sent a team before us that got themselves killed by going in too aggressively. Luckily, she didn't seem to hold it against us overmuch but...I would make a note to bring this up to the person who gave me this mission and the Coalition. After all, this oculd have totally gone sideways if the youkai had held the actions of the other party against us. Just what the hell were they thinking, sending us in without this kind of information. The loss of their comrades, at least given the Jorugumo's explanation, didn't seem to sit too badly with Edwin. Either he disliked his fellow members that much or he had spine when it counted. Either way, it did improve my opinion of him a little to see him accept the challenge for the game with the youkai and not wet himself and try to suggest taking her up on leaving when he heard he would be the one she would take if they lost it. Given the circumstances, it was a rather advantageous deal. It gave us a chance to take her peacefully with only the pipsqueak as a possible casualty, and given the situation, he probably would end up that way if we got into a confrontation either way. We were in her spider's den, so there wasn't much we could do to escape without her consent, and we would be at a severe disadvantage in a fight, especially since he could be disarmed with a bit of webbing likely. Deciding I had no reason to interfere or butt in, I just decided to give the scrawny boy a nod to acknowledge his bravery and kept myself ready just in case things went south.

Things weren't exactly going good, and Alistair was not going to allow himself to simply just be pushed aside by this spider woman. They were here to assist, not be sent away simply without good reason. Aye. Wait. We didn't intend to come off as threatening on purpose. We were on guard for any potential form of Ambush. Especially with the danger the Church is presenting right now, if that offended you it is my apologies on that matter. As we did not intend to just come in and scare either of you or come off as attempting to attack you.The centaur's aura sitll oozed out, he had a genuine look of concern for the two of them and was attempting to help as due his duty as a I.A.C.S.B agent actually. The other two he was unsure of slightly but trusted them equally. Hey, wait a minute. Who said anything about working FOR us. Ma'am we're here to assist, the I.A.C.S.B are only here to offer to promise you safety. You certainly don't look weak at all, and I can tell you'd be able to take care of those guys for sure.A friendly muse offered to the spider woman in order to rile her up and get her to believe Alistair was definently on her side. Negotations were important to keep and pin down carefully at the moment. However. What will you do when more show up, those guys won't give up. Believe me...I suffered too at their own persecution and have had to deal with them myself. I'm not demanding for you to come with us, but we're only offering protection and safety in this situation. I trust you don't intend to take on an army by yourself at some point now do you?Because if just a few guys come now, and they don't succeed. What about later, what about tomorrow? What about a week from now? What about Reika over here's safety as well?
The BraveHoofs aura was extended out, and would certainly continue to maintain it's effect. The aura was nothing extreme or intense, but it was merely to assist with the negotiation at the moment. At Least...Do it for her. Come on. The BraveHoof would offer a hand outwards, clearly gesturing it was her choice to come with them or not. Then came the offer of the game, with Edwin himself having accepted to go onto that. He would pull back his hand if the spider had not come forth as well. With that, he would sigh. If there really is no other changing your Mind. Then Alright. Edwin...He would remark the last part to of course, Edwin. Damn was he really going to take a risk at this, well, it's not like they wouldn't be able to solve the problem at hand.

”Such bravery, such bravado! Very handsome.” remarked Shinobu with an approving nod, seeming quite pleased by Edwin’s response – his bitter tongue really was entertaining. But, before she could explain her intentions, she earned a lecture from Alistair. At first, she seemed clearly irritated – explanations and apologies hadn’t much weight in her mind; much less reassurance and clear attempts to curry her favour. But… she did eventually turn her head his way, seeming to at least pay attention to his remark regarding her little compatriot’s safety. Reika herself, on the other hand, gave a tiny wince; she of all people knew that the spider saw her sanctity as something of a soft spot. Unfortunately, not quite in the way Alistair might hope for… ”Tsk… shut your mouth, dog. I don’t answer to anyone, much less some limp-dick bureaucrats. I can take care of things myself. Only weaklings and children rely on hiding behind a system to survive.” snarled the lady; her face and shoulders crinkling with arachnid features for a moment in the midst of her outburst, with a glimpse of eight beady red eyes and thorned exoskeleton standing out in the moody darkness. While Alistair’s aura had been working alright so far, it couldn’t save him from stepping on such a sore spot – still, she didn’t seem quite hostile yet. ”I’m not so stupid to play one-man-army… but, whether I could or couldn’t? Well, that’s up to you.”Snubbing Alistair’s open hand with a derisive huff, Shinobu would turn her attention back to her newest toy… and a willing one too, very curious. ”So, let’s play a game. It’ll be fun, I promise.” With a gentle smirk, the lady shifted back. ”While I won’t judge their results, the other two can play too. It’s very very easy, too. Sort of like… Red Light, Green Light? Sound familiar, I hope? I don’t really know American games so well, so you’ll just have to get used to my rules.”Gently walking towards the trio, Shinobu would just pass between them - ”It’s very simple. Just don’t turn around.” stated the Mystic Kind, audibly walking a few more steps past them. But, then she simply stopped; with no more sounds of note passing from behind the three – it didn’t seem like much of a game. ”Not too tough for you children, I hope? Well, not that two of you even have to play, but… I like an audience, right?”And with just that much, she went silent once again; leaving Reika to be the only one looking her way – and whom rather promptly turned around herself, not seeming too comfortable herself… perhaps this was a common pastime for the arachnid. A shiver would run up Edwin’s spine, though – a familiar sensation, very similar to the one he’d felt upon entering… just far, far worse. Similarly, Katsumi and Alistair would be able to feel the presence of… something, behind them – something that wasn’t there before. But, they would be left to wait. Not a sound. …such fun? …But, for those who deigned it wise to ‘lose’ the game… Yellow and black ribbons staked through the darkness, peppered with thorn of fur the size of daggers – a wonderful match to the spider silk that had been spun around the room. But, looking just at the door, there wasn’t much else to see… but looking up, even through the darkness, a familiar set of red sparks stared back through the darkness. Through the shadows, it was enough to be intimidating – but deep down, something far more potent than sheer size or monstrousness would grip the unlucky agent’s hearts.
Sometimes, on a job for the IACSB, 'just' a giant spider was something to hope for.

Edwin's scowl didn't approve. It didn't help what fragile ego (or his nerves) by being essentially treated as, at best, a favoured dog by this jorogumo. Still, considering the options, at least Shinobu hadn't decided to just flat out leave - or eat them. Clearly she was amused by something - probably his stubborn stupidity. Right now, his mind clashed between his frustration at the jorogumo for putting him through this idiocy, and his own paranoia fearing his imminent death.
Edwin couldn't even feel the schadenfreude that he'd have usually felt from seeing his frustrating comrades get chewed out. Perhaps Alistair's aura was helping him to some degree, as he felt like he was still in control of his faculties, but it was easy to see his body was unwillingly tense. Was this what it meant to put your body on the line? It was a feeling he hated, a feeling that went against every single instinct lodged deep in his brain. For an instant, fire flashed through his mind, a sensation of searing running along his back. But ultimately, his own stubbornness won out as, he faced towards the jorogumo with her damnable smirk. "One day..." he silently swore to himself, a scowl still on his face as he pulled up from whatever depths he had whatever bravery he could muster. "One day...nothing will make me feel this fear again."
Her explanation for a second confused him - enough to make him visibly relax. "What...?" he quietly muttered, but was ignored as the jorogumo walked out of his sight. "Just don't...turn around? What game is she getting--"
And all of a sudden, there was ice. Ice, in the bottom of his spine, that shot its way through his entire body. Something red, that he couldn't see but could FEEL. Icicles in his spine, in his body, in his brain. Some primal instinct recognised it as fear - a fear he hadn't felt in years, not since the inquisitioners of the Church had found him, had seared his body and soul. But the Church had been fire. This hall was ice. Edwin's senses were ice, stabbing and piercing his body, as painful as any steel. Anyone who looked at him right now would see his eyes wide, his mouth fallen open in some wordless fear gripping him - any bravado that he'd been showing earlier had long since disappeared.
"Aaa--" Gasp of wordless ice sound. Ice in his throat. The barrel of the shotgun fell to the floor, only some desperate survival instinct lodged within Edwin's mind managing to keep the grip in his hand - but it might as well have been a toy at this point. Even if he somehow could have found the strength to move his body...against what? The only strength he could find was to force his legs to keep him standing, and even then his legs were trembling. The same instinct - that 'sixth sense' that shot this pain through his body also quietly screamed at him - 'do not move' - the only thing that might keep him alive.

THis was not good, the Centaur seemed to have hit a sore spot, which just made things worse. Luckily however, it blew over without much of an issue for a variety of reasons, so I had no reason to fight....yet. However, what the youkai was doing was very suspicious, and the fact that her companion also turned and faced the same direction as we did set off more red flags than I cared to count, especially with the presence I was feeling coming from behind me. They weren't there before, and they were dangerous, that was all I could tell. I tensed my body and widened my stance, prepared for an attack to come from behind without turning around. If my hunch was correct, turning around would be a very bad thing to do. I did however check to see how the person for whom the challenge was being offered. To his credit, he hadn't turned around and he hadn't soiled himself yet, but other than that he looked like a terrified schoolgirl being assaulted by something out of a questionable book with a pink binding one would find in the back of a bookstore in my home country. He was barely holding on to the weapon that he refused to drop earlier and he was trembling like a newborn animal. I sighed and made a comment at the rather frightened stick saying, "You took the challenge, now stop whimpering like a schoolgirl staring down a large foreign man in a back ally. Grow a pair or don't take up a challenge like this again." WIth that, I simply returned to being ready to strike whatever it was that was behind me if it decided to indeed touch me, steeling my resolve and readying my body to fight whatever horror the Youkai had prepared for us.
Abilities Used: Name: Ki Sense Description: From being able to control the body's Ki, the user is now sensitive to Ki signatures around them. Through such sensitivity, the Artists can now sense people's presences by this and be able differentiate one signature against each person. The term "killing intent" comes from this as usually one's Ki rises with the intent to cause harm. All Artists have at least E rank at it and sometimes do not increase it as they are busy trying to perfect their fighting techniques. This is why some of them go to the I.A.C.S.B. for experience. Extremely high levels of this ability may even lead to a blind man being able to fight better than he could actually see if he had working eyes. Rank: E Name: Environmental Awareness Description: The ability of heightened keen observation of one's own environment. It is gained from being involved in dangerous situations that may cause death or drastic injury. This capacity for sensing danger relies on increasing the sensitivity of all five senses. Rank: E

Fortunately, the horror was short-lived, it seemed – the sense of danger passed with sudden relief; only heralded by the near-silent skittering of what sounded like plastic on wood. Of course, Shinobu wasn’t about to miss a bit of fun while it was so tempting; sneaking up on her unfortunate friend. Unlike Edwin, Katsumi or Alistair, Reika didn’t seem to have any way of noticing that the peril had already moved on; leaving her still trembling as her apparent senior snuck up behind her with almost comical excitement. ”You lose, Reika~!” taunted the spider; earning a squeal of shock from the poor girl – and in turn, a very bitter glare, while Shinobu just cackled with glee at the reaction.
”Okay, okay; you played fair. To be honest, I was gonna play along anyway… you’d obviously lose if I went any further, so it hardly seemed like a challenge to even have a game in the first place.” mused the jorōgumo haughtily, her ego as grandiose as ever – no doubt now even worse given she’d gotten her way in the end. ”But, nice work all the same, puppy. You win, this time around. I like people who know not to stick their noses where it doesn’t belong. Your busty friend could use some work on her survival instincts with that tongue, though. I guess I’ll have to leave her in the same state as you some other time, hm? Ah, but… I don’t like to play with my food too much.”
Shrugging a bit overdramatically as she drunk in her supposed victory all the more, the lady sat down amongst her web once more – only to be promptly distracted by her smaller compatriot giving her a rather pointed flick to the forehead; clearly still anything but impressed by Shinobu’s attitude. ”They played your stupid game – so can we go now?” grumbled the girl, folding her arms a bit sulkily; ”But, you have to promise the IACSB doesn’t have any bad plans for us… we have a tough enough life on our own. Shinobu’s not good with authorities, either… as you can probably tell…”
”Ah, but that’s simple. If they give you any trouble, I’ll just come back and kill these three, okay?” added Shinobu as proudly as ever, smirking as she folded her legs; ”I’m sure they knew the risks coming into this. They’ve done better than that daemon’s toys, but we’ll have to see if they’re any better than the Church, huh?” The remarks just earned an eye-roll from Reika, though; clearly fairly fed up with her partner’s murder-happy approach to life – or perhaps it was just an ego-boosting attitude. Either way, the jorōgumo already had two counts to her name… it was probably best not to ask too many questions.
Standing up again, the tall lady approached the trio again alongside her meek comrade; placing her hands on her hips with an expectant expression. ”Okay, lead the way. Though I can’t put too much faith in Captain Craps-Himself, you’re probably better than Little Miss Bitchy and… uh, a literal horse. Didn’t see much of them in Japan…” But while her partner complained endlessly, Reika would scoot up alongside Edwin, awkwardly offering a piece of paper - ”Um, do you mind if – I get your phone number? It’s just… just in case anything does go wrong. And… we are new here, so… even a bit of help would be nice…” murmured the smaller girl a bit bashfully… err, was she blushing…?

And just like that, the horror ceased. Edwin fell to his knees, gasping for air, the ice-cold feeling disappearing almost as quickly as it had come on. "What the hell was...?!"
It didn't really matter anyway, as he forced himself back to his feet, his body still shivering. In the end, it was just another reminder that, as usual, he was no match for these kind of demons. If he was paralyzed by the sheer fear of it all, maybe Katsumi was right, annoyance that she was. Somehow the future didn't look much more pleasant - and next time he might actually get eaten instead of falling into one of these traps.
But...in the face of adversity, unbelievably, he'd won. Granted, Shinobu was playing it off as though that was her intent the whole time, and she probably had been holding back, since if she'd wanted to she could have ripped him apart like wet tissue paper, but still, he'd actually won, and without getting the group into a pointless fight. If he weren't still shaky, it would have almost been...euphoric - but that would have been crushed anyways under Shinobu's gigantic ego. "Yeah...great." he muttered as Shinobu...congratulated him, in her own particular way. He holstered his shotgun inside his jacket - it seemed like the jorōgumo wasn't going to attack them now, and quite frankly even if she was there was little Edwin could do about it.
How he hoped for the day that he'd be able to stand tall in the face of such a fear...or preferably, not have to face it in the first place.
He was brought out of his reverie by, of all things, the girl, who seemed to have no fear in calling out the jorōgumo for her idiocy. Granted, it was clear there was some strong friendship between them, but even so, what kind of inner will did that girl have to be able to do such a thing? Part of him was envious, part of him was idly bemused by how useful she would have been to the IACSB - or really, any of the major groups around here - if she'd decided to join with them. Then again, it wasn't any of Edwin's business what she wanted to do with her life, so as far as Edwin cared she could tour the USA with her spider-girlfriend as much as she wanted after the IACSB were done talking with her.
Oh wait, he'd probably better try and assuage Reika's worries, at least before Katsumi said something else stupid. "No, the IACSB don't have any bad plans for you. They want to ask questions, that's it." As far as what questions they wanted to ask - which probably wouldn't be helped by Shinobu's having murdered the last group that came, though to an extent even Edwin felt they hadn't helped their cause if they'd been stupid enough to come in shooting first - but then, in his opinion, literally anything was better than the Church, including consorting with demons. Of course, having Shinobu immediately mention afterwards coming back to kill him didn't help matters much, and he shuddered again. Seriously, why did everything in this world seem to want him either dead or insane...?
Shinobu again gloriously insulted him - at this point, he'd had enough of all the goddamn insults. Katsumi and Shinobu's constant belittling, combined with Alistair's overly preachy fence-straddling had been enough for one day. He just wanted to get home, sleep, and maybe play some DOOM (the early versions of course, he needed some brainless retro retribution right now). Well, that was the plan until suddenly he felt something stand alongside him, half-stepping to the side instinctively before he realised it was just Reika, strangely offering him a piece of paper and asking...wait what?
"Gkk." Edwin's brain froze for a second, and his cheeks almost lit up from his own blushing. "I mean, uh...w-whatever. Fine. S-sure." He stammered as he took the piece of paper, looking away from Reika as he quickly scribbled down the number of his mobile with a pencil before handing the piece of paper back to her. "D-dunno what you'd need it for, but...fine. There. Yes." he mumbled, handing it back, and then turning to Shinobu, trying desperately to make his face stop looking so flushed. Maybe he could just pretend it was Shinobu's horrifying experience from earlier? "R-right. Transportation's been arranged, we'll be heading straight to the HQ. If there's anything else you two need to do here, better do it now."
