There was almost never a good reason for one of status to tread where they do not belong. Victoria had been taught that by her parents when she was a little girl, when her heart still pumped blood and her eyes were blind to the nature of the world around her. The poor were desperate and had a base cleverness to them. They never planned ahead too much but were very good at thinking one step ahead. The key, obviously, was to foresee that step and raise them another. It usually did not end well for them.
However, there were occasionally acceptable reasons to wander into such pitiful and dangerous territory. Namely that a solid way to keep a tight leash on one's status was by manipulating the underworld as best one could. Sadly that was a task that had become far more difficult in modern times, even as a vampire, and so that was not the reason Victoria carefully wandered the ghettos that night. Her encounter with the Strigoi woman had reminded her that stagnation and complacency were the true death of potential. Victoria needed to keep moving forward, expanding her reach and scouting where best to do so. Obviously an amazing first step would be to make contact with Fiorella Conti and establish a sturdy connection with a fellow Fang.
Unfortunately, the egotist was rather difficult to arrange a meeting with.
So rather than look to the Entertainment District she instead turned her attention to the residential area. Though she could easily have sent Raleigh to scout the area she figured it was a job best done with two. And so the lycan followed in her shadow, out of sight, while she wandered the ghettos in plain moonlight. So far she'd found little but a few bums and hoodlums, both of which eye her with odd mixtures of hunger and hatred. Though she kept her aura mostly suppressed it helped to be ready to activate it should one of these dejected pieces of filth try anything with her. Better to lower their guard and persuade them to back off than to spill blood unnecessarily.
Should that fail, well, she had Raleigh for that. Of course her handgun was hidden on her person as well, at the back of her waist beneath her coat, but it made unfavorable noise in an area that already drew too much attention from officials. Raleigh was quiet.
As her goal that night was to memorize or at least familiarize herself with this area, should it ever become of use to her, she didn't focus horribly on the people. Since she wanted Raleigh to be out of sight, she kept him out of mind as well. Though the average human would likely not hear his steps she still could. He kept about fifty paces behind her and took less direct routes when following her, moving through alleyways and spaces between buildings as opposed to open roads. To Victoria's relief the ghettos were mostly void of people that night, so she was able to easily focus surveying the area.
