Weather has been ultimately unpredictable for as it always has been on this month of May. But it could hardly be surprising given the setting of the I.A.C.S.B.'s headquarters. For many, getting from building to building has always been a pain with the harsh outside elements, but bearable nevertheless given the building's stable temperature once they arrive at their given destination. Robert D. Eichorn sat in the middle of one of the main office's briefing rooms. Windowless for the sake of necessary secrecy while also being necessarily compact enough for all the necessities and the people to fit in. The projector was outfitted to the very ceiling as expected and the visual screen unfurled for the presentation at hand. As the door opened, Eichorn looked up to see the incoming 3rd Class newcomers. One side of his lips curled into a subtly eerie grin at them. "My, you're all early. Do come in. I was just about to finish setting things up."He stood up from the chair he was just sitting on with a number of files in one hand and a laptop in another. The advisor walked over to the back where the necessary cables lay at a table to hook up with the projector. "Please take a seat. It won't take long, but do take the time to introduce yourselves."With that said, he busied himself back to the laptop and projector as he left the rest to start talking.

After checking my email that the young It boy Edwin had fixed, I found that we had been assigned a mission, and the briefing was in about fifteen minutes. After informing Edwin of this, and hurriedly apologizing for the abruptness of our departure, Lili and I headed out towards the briefing room after grabbing our equipment and getting ready.
Thanks to the fact that the both of us are in fairly good shape and ran, we made it there not only on time, but a little bit early it seemed, as the older man who seemed to be the one giving us the briefing mentioned that we were, and gestured for the two of us to sit down and introduce ourselves.
Taking him up on his offer, I made my way to an optimal seat in the front that faced the projector and would have no visual obstructions between myself and it no matter how many people were to be going on the mission.
After setting down my gear and getting comfortable in my seat, I began to introduce myself, "Hello Sir, I am Arwen Drake, 3rd Class member of the Special Investigation Division, Heir to the Magus House Drake, and a half-elf, as my ears probably indicated to you. This is my partner, Lili von Brandy, and she is a half-werewolf. She does not talk much, however she will follow orders and mission objectives perfectly, and is capable of everything an agent should be able to do," I said, deciding to introduce my comrade as well, as she would be unlikely to introduce herself, as she was a fairly shy person.
"May I inquire as to your name, sir, before we get down to business with this debriefing? I find these things to go smoother when all parties are at least acquainted with each other, also, would you like some cookies? I was not sure how long this mission would last, and I had recently baked some, so I brought them with as they might get stale if I had left them in my office," I continued, offering the superior officer in front of me the gingersnaps I had made earlier, hopefully he would enjoy them. "I hope you like gingersnaps, as that is all I have at the moment unfortunately."

First Act - Briefing
Rein had woken up early that morning. He knew that the 3rd Classes had an assignment today, so wasting time wasn't an option. The boy brushed his teeth immediatly after getting out of the bed, and walked towards the kitchen, just to be surprised: Sophia had woken up even earlier, and normally, she wouldn't do it even one or two hours after Rein did. "You're surprisingly early today. Why is that?" He asked, although he already knew the answer. His savior - that has been raising him like a real mother would - looked at his face and smiled. She, as well, knew that he didn't need the answer. "I'm off, then. Take care." Rein said, after eating his breakfast, and left home.
He was headed to the I.A.C.S.B. briefing room, where their mission would be better explained. Truth be said, Rein had no information about what kind of mission it'd be, but he didn't know if it was lack of attention or if they simply didn't inform the members yet. He lived slightly far away from the organization, though, so, when he got there, it was about time to start. An old man, though, said that he - and two other girls that got there right before him - were still early, and that they could take their time for introductions. "Tsc."
The boy didn't like to talk with strangers at all. It was not like he was shy, but he simply finds it annoying. It was a necessity though, as, he willingly or not, they would be partners on a mission. He took a sit in the front chairs, because otherwise, he wouldn't be able to see the projection. He was short, yeah. "Rein Falkenhart, 3rd Class, from the Special Investigation Division." At that moment, then, he released a blue spark from his right index finger. "I believe you know my kind as...Psychics." Even though he properly introduced himself, his expression would leave it clear that he had no intention to make friends with anyone there. Rein would hear anything told to him with attention, but he'd most likely ignore anything not related to the mission.
"..." He remained silent, then. There was no need for unnecessary words. He'd hear the mission's explanation and execute his orders the best way he could. Making friends or socializing was a simple waste of time. He would be asking to be betrayed again...

Dragged along by Arwen, Lili sat down beside her unlikely teammate; seeming somewhat displeased to be there – she preferred to get her orders by text, honestly. People were hard to read properly. Plus, patience was never a werewolf’s specialty… oh well. At least it seemed the half-elf was keen on doing the speaking for her. Apart from referring to her as ‘Lili von Brandy’, which wasn’t really the most flattering name she had received so far while working for the IACSB. Shooting the girl a brief look, the girl decided it wasn’t worth it to speak up. Still, to her credit, Lili seemed attentive enough while her partner went about buttering up her superior for some reason. Was there a point to bribing your own boss before a briefing? Maybe he’d give more information or something? Admittedly, Lili was just a bit annoyed that she was being overlooked to pamper someone else again, but that seemed to be a recurring theme with Arwen… hrmph. Couldn’t she just have her all to herself? It was such a bother. Glancing about, she noticed the new arrival and in turn his introduction – a psychic, gross. Lili wasn’t a fan of the supernatural on the whole, to be honest; having enough strife with her own inhuman nature as it was. Having to think about how to act sensitive and considerate towards other bizarre beings was a headache to her; even more so given how they all seemed moody or egotistical or just insane. Not that she could talk, but… she just wanted to be left alone, so whatever! Now she really was getting impatient… she just wanted to break something.

The I.A.C.S.B. agent nodded at the introduction of names, he glanced at each person in the room with a bit of interest. But nevertheless, continued to fiddle around with the wires to get the damned projector working. A team composed of a werewolf hybrid, an elf hybrid, and a human psychic who is in the A.T.S. program for this given task at hand. Certainly, Command was going for diversity this time. "Certainly, Agent Drake. I shall very soon," he replied with one final twist of a cord to the laptop's outlet, "But I will pass on your cookies for the moment. And perhaps you may not want to eat them during this briefing."The familiar hum above could be heard. Robert nodded in satisfaction of his work. Standing up from the table at the back, he started to walk on over to the front of the room as he left his laptop behind hooked to the cords connecting to the projector. The agent took out a small remote and clicked a button while at the same time flicking the room's lights off. Light flashed from the projection lenses onto the drab white screen. The screen now took on a form of a Powerpoint Presentation just as bland as it were without the projection. "Well then, let's begin. I am Agent Robert D. Eichorn. First Class of the Central Intelligence Agency," Robert began with the same eerie smile gracing his ghoulish features with the dimness emphasizing them at the same time, "For this task, I shall be your tactical adviser."He paused to click the remote's button to move to the next slide to show a map of what seems to be the entirety of San Francisco in California. On it are red dots marking in several places with pictures of people's faces near each one. Several of these pictures seems to police officers judging by their attire. "We have reports of disappearances and even killings in the Golden Gate City. And that normally isn't our jurisdiction. But some of these reports describes demon activity... Especially when you see what they did to the victims."Another slide was turned to show the vicious remains of the killings. The images of corpses littered the slide. Chests were ripped open to show a hollow cavity. Heads were gored into misshapen forms as it showed torn muscle tissues and exposed bone. Intestines spilled out from the gut as it lay in a pool of crimson. They all seemed to be the messy remains of a wasteful predator. Eichorn quickly moved to the next slide before anyone would feel nauseous. Robert calmly continued, "And I'm sure some of you are confused by now. There seems to be a Gate that continues to appear and disappear. None of the large scale ones that usually invade whole cities, what we are seeing here is an aberration of aberrations. We are to work with the S.F.P.D. to get to the bottom of this and find out what is going on with that Gate. Any questions?"

"Dammitdammitdammitdammitdammitdammit-" Edwin muttered under his breath as he ran.
Edwin was in a foul mood. This was not unusual, considering his personality, but what was somewhat surprising was him running down the corridors of the IACSB in an even fouler mood than usual. He continued swearing to himself as he raced down the corridors, looking for the Administrative Offices in particular. He'd managed to find those, and now he was racing to find the right one, with only some basic numbers and friendly advice as his guide - which, considering his frustration, was near a godsend. Even more amazingly, his glasses hadn't fallen off, so maybe his luck wasn't completely rotten, just mostly.
He wasn't quite sure when exactly it was he saw the correct door, only that he raced towards it, flung it open as hard as he could, looked inside to see the briefing was over and yelled "DAMMIT!" With that outburst finally out of his system he leant against the doorframe, struggling to catch his breath. "That rat bastard Geoff..." he muttered, huffing. "...when I find him again...I swear to Christ...I'm gonna..."
It took a couple of seconds for him to look up and realise that his outburst was probably not exactly appropriate behaviour, especially considering there was a senior IACSB agent present, and was most likely staring at him like he was insane. Edwin forced himself to swallow his pride along with the air. Now he was going to have to attempt to explain himself, all the worse. "S-sorry, sir..." He forced himself to stand upright, even as he still felt sore from running. "I was...given the wrong location for this briefing."
He took a deep breath. "Edwin Melchiott, sir. Technological and Magical Research Development, 3rd class." he announced, silently hoping that wouldn't end up being a permanent position after this. "The TAMRD are...interested in gathering any possible data on the..." Edwin ran the few things he'd been told of this mission through his brain as fast as he could. "...on the Gate. In San Francisco. Since it's so different from the other ones." It was the most he'd been told, since he was expected to learn the details at the briefing.
As awkward as Edwin usually felt around people, the feeling of people staring at him just magnified it further. Would the senior agent decide to kick him out for his tardiness? The one with the power got to do whatever he felt like doing - though Edwin had no idea what his reaction would be - so Edwin just decided to risk the humilation and sit down at a free table silently. Getting kicked out probably wouldn't do anything worse for his already terrible reputation, and as much as he'd have never admitted it he was interested to learn more about what was going on if he got the chance.

The boy who had entered the room after us introduced himself as Rein Falkenheart, a third class in the SID, just like Lili and I, how strange we had not been introduced before. He seemed a rather melancholy boy just by his demeanor. I wondered what caused a cute boy like him to be so glum and down, maybe he was just in a bad mood today?
However, this theory was dashed when he revealed he was a psychic, and I remembered what my family had taught me about them. They were humans who had the ability to perform supernatural feats as easily as they breathed, and were still completely human. They were neither mystic kind nor mages, just humans who could imitate magic without any knowledge of it. As such, they were generally reviled and looked down upon, much like Hybrids, however as they were usually mutations, and traits were usually not passed down in families, they often did not even have their family as a support. This probably is the past the boy had, reviled and looked down upon by the world for the way he was born, and that is why he seemed so withdrawn and reclusive.
That was it, I would have to cheer this boy up, and show him that while people could be cruel, they could also be kind as well. Immediately I turned to the boy and said, "Hello there, Rein, I hope you don't mind me calling you that, my name is Arwen Drake, but you can just call me Arwen. Would you like a cookie? They are gingersnaps, I just made them today, " I said as I held out the tray to the boy.
However, my efforts were cut short by the man in front of us addressing me and stating that I might not want to eat them during the briefing, the implications of this passing completely over my head. He then introduced himself as Robert Eichorn, a first class agent with the CIA, before starting the presentation. He told us a bit about the case, advancing some slides as he went. It seemed demons were popping up in San Francisco and killing people. How horrid, these people were being otrn from their families without even being able to defend themselves.
However, no matter what he had said, that could not have prepared me for the next slide. On it was a bloody mess, and I wondered what it was, until he said it was a person. I immediately dropped the tray of cookies that I had been holding out to rein, my jaw slacked with horror, and brought my other hand to my mouth out of habit, to cover it. I was shocked, how could it be so horrid, it was so brutal...so unnecessary. My mom had taught me that, while it was unfortunate, sometimes violence was necessary. However, she had also taught me that it was to be done as quickly and painlessly as possible, as to make sure the situation was settled with as little bloodshed as possible. How could someone pervert that so horribly, I can only imagine how much pain these people were in when they died, and how terrible it was for their families to look upon the mess that was once their loved ones. I was shocked, and did not even pay attention to the rest of the briefing, only barely registering the man who ran into the room after it started, assumedly a latecomer.

Glad to finally get things started with the presentation before her, Lili listened dutifully as Eichorn introduced himself and the situation – killings, disappearances; ah, this she could understand! It reminded her of her old work, though… it wasn’t like her stuff got found out much thanks to the IACSB’s aid and her having a bit some fingers dipped in the organised crime scene, among others (now that had been a farewell party to remember, even given Lili’s anti-social attitude); but they were at least familiar terms. The work of demons, however… not really her jurisdiction. Well, it’d at least be a learning experience. Maybe she could pick up some pointers! Upon seeing the actual images, though; Lili’s enthusiasm disappeared as quickly as it had appeared – just monster stuff, it seemed. While definitely a brutal killer, it was more out of habit than preference… all that blood and gore, it was just annoying clean up. Good for intimidation, though. Intestines, muscle tissues, blood and bone… liver… kidney… lung… Lili felt her breathe grow heavier. Those thoughts and words hung on her mind for a moment, but she refocussed herself. Talk of gates and invasions… she’d never really caught up too much with the demon business, but she at least knew basics. Sounded like a boring investigation so far, honestly. The late appearance distracted Lili from the presentation, though; him again? He was interesting, kind of. Lateness, talk of research; maybe not so interesting after all. At least he was a little entertaining. Nothing compared to Arwen, but – Arwen? The half-elf beside Lili looked awfully pale… eh, was she really so naïve? Still, Lili felt a bit bad for her… people were supposed to help other people with this sort of thing, she thought. Her friend from school had been a bit like that when she’d killed someone the first time. But, what was she supposed to do…? Unsure of exactly what to do, Lili gently held the other girl’s hand in an effort to make her attempt at comforting somewhat subtle – even the wolf wasn’t stupid enough to go hugging her or the like amongst the group; especially given Arwen might have the worst reaction of them all. A tempting thought all the same, but for now the girl just gave her an attempt at a comforting nod and the hint of embrace. Maybe that’d help? But, Lili herself felt a bit of out of sorts too, honestly. She felt, really hungry…

Robert D. Eichorn Just as he was going through the presentation, Robert immediately jerked his head towards the sound of the tray clattering. The cheerful half-elf was no longer as bright while she looked upon the images with revulsion. He only raised an eyebrow at her while being visibly confused that she was this shocked. This is what the I.A.C.S.B. was about. It's not some picnic. Somewhere in the back of his mind, there was a bit of doubt forming. If she couldn't even keep her composure, it brought into question as to why she's even in the organization in the first place. Then again, Command has been rather lax lately. Though at least the half-werewolf took it better than she did. The door flung open to produce a panting young man who had just arrived in a hurry. The Agent stared at him in barely hidden confusion, until he realized who this was. It was the tech guy from the T.A.M.R.D. who was supposed to be part of this mission. "So nice of you to finally join us, Agent Melchiott," Robert replied with a small smirk, "But it appears that you've already have the gist of what I've mentioned so far, how fortunate. We can continue then. Please do find a seat and sit down."He left the T.A.M.R.D. agent to do so while clicking on the remote's button to continue to the next slide. On the screen are signs of the surrounding area of the murder sites. Visible claw and gouge marks littered the walls in each picture. It seemed that it was at least sharp enough to claw through brick. In other pictures are visible signs of a screen of chain-linked fences demolished by brute force without having been cut up. Robert began grimly as he swept past each picture, "Whatever demon is around in the city, we at least know that it's big and it has claws. All these kills so far has been the same demon. We don't have any reports of other of these monsters going around. For now we're going to work with that information in mind."The lights were flipped on, which no doubt would cause the room's inhabitants to recoil at the sudden brightness. The projector was shut off as the humming finally stopped. "In summary, we must eliminate this demon and find its Gate so that we can have Mr. Melchiott study it. Any questions?"

So it turned out that it would only be humiliation Edwin would have to face today - that, and Eichorn's smug smirking. Well, it wasn't like it was something he hadn't dealt with before. Besides, as much as he'd like to have called Eichorn out on it, Edwin wasn't stupid enough to do that - sure, Eichorn was old, but that just meant he'd survived longer than most in this place.
Instead, he decided to try and collect his thoughts while he at least had the leisure to do so this time. From what he’d been told, the T.A.M.R.D. were interested in collecting data on the gates. With enough data gathered on the various energy signatures the gate gave off, the senior members of the T.A.M.R.D. believed they might be able to predict earlier when the gates would appear and allow for earlier counter-attack. Some, including Edwin himself, even believed that the gates could be reverse-engineered and allow for instant teleportation over long distances – possibly even between dimensions. The big problem with this research was that with most of the bigger, more stable gates more powerful demons came out, requiring the expertise of the SID in order to push them back which gave little chance for study when you were too busy trying to survive and prevent the surrounding area from being destroyed. Certain higher-up members believed that the more instable nature of this gate, while more difficult to gather data from, would be a safer bet.
As to why they’d put a low-rate 3rd-class member on the team instead of a professional…honestly, Edwin had no idea. Perhaps they figured this was an easy enough mission for him. Perhaps they thought he was talented and skilled enough to be able to gather this data while being unimportant enough that he was expendable should things go wrong. Perhaps they just wanted him out of the way. Whatever the case, this was Edwin’s only real chance to try and get a foothold in the T.A.M.R.D. and be recognised for…well, anything. Edwin had enough technology that he could get a reasonable amount of research done on the gates, so it could at least be done. Besides, the idea of being IT support for the I.A.C.S.B. for the rest of his life drove him to near insanity – this needed to go right if he was to have any kind of future.
The bigger problem came when he’d learnt that this was a mission primarily consisting of members of the SID. Their reputation for being the combat arm of the I.A.C.S.B. was well known, and if they started shooting first and asking questions later, they’d end up destroying the gate and any of Edwin’s own hopes would go up in gunsmoke.
He looked over his shoulder at the other members. Lili was attempting to comfort Arwen, whom had gone white – likely from what had been on the screen earlier. Edwin was doing a remarkably good job of not showing just how disturbed he was himself – while he’d seen such things before, never in person. From what little he knew of them, Arwen would probably exercise caution – but if Arwen came into serious danger, he had a feeling Lili would destroy everything to keep her safe – so besides actually getting data on the gates, keeping Arwen safe was the biggest priority.
He took a glance at the other member at the briefing – the only one whom he had no idea about. For some reason, the kid reminded him of…well, himself. For some reason that rather annoyed him. In any case, his silence and sullenness made him near impossible to read – if he was anything like Edwin himself, there was probably going to be no telling what he’d do, at least until the mission started, though Edwin doubted that he could get him to do anything unless Eichorn ordered so, which would make things difficult.
The odds were already stacked against Edwin’s own mission – he wondered if the T.A.M.R.D. really expected him to fail? Edwin grimaced. That was just his own luck. “How the hell am I supposed to do this?” he thought to himself.
Well, grumbling wouldn't get anyone anywhere. First things first. “Mr. Eichorn, do we have any witness information on how long this particular gate stays open for?” he asked the senior agent. For his own plans, timing was going to be everything, and this gate was so different from the usual that the T.A.M.R.D. hadn’t yet had enough time to gather much data on this gate.

Suddenly I felt a hand in my own, and I looked over in my stupor to see my partner Lili holding my hand, trying her best to comfort me, which was quite hard for her. With that, I snapped out of it, and the numbness of shock passed, and was simply replaced by pure and unadulterated rage at the demons that caused this. I never was the best at controlling my emotions, that was for sure. However, before I could say something that would cause trouble, or do something stupid, I began to go over what my mom had taught me in my head, to calm my nerves and steel myself for the mission ahead.
I started to take deep breaths, and gripped the hand Lili offered me rather tightly, and began to repeat the chant in my head, the one I was taught long ago by my mother, whose purpose was to help tame the natural pacifism of the elves and harden our resolve. According to my father, it was very much like what some mages do, separating their domestic self from their magus self, which allowed them to do things they could never consider normally when their magic required it of them.
"Oh Goddess of the Hunt, give me the resolve not to hesitate. Let my hand not waver, and let my arrow fly true, striking directly at the heart. May the deed be done, and the retribution be paid, and let no hesitation stop me. In exchange, I offer this sacrifice, this blood offering. And when the hunt is over, allow me to return to myself."
As I finished the prayer, I bit the inside of my lip, and felt the blood flow, hardening my resolve and calming my nerves. I then took a deep breath and prepared to apologize to the group. "I do apologize for my inappropriate behavior, I had simply not prepared myself prior to the briefing, this has been resolved," I say, standing up and apologizing to First Class Eichorn.
I then turned to the boy who had come through he door, who I recognized as the IT guy who had just been fixing my computer. However, formalities were no longer on my mind, and I simply asked the boy, with a very serious expression on my face, "How much of this demon do you require for study, as I need to know how much of it I can incinerate as a paltry offering to the poor people it has killed." Yes, I intended to extract vengeance in the place of those it had killed, one of the duties my mother had taught me about as a huntress. Our duty was to supply our tribe with sustenance, and when called upon, to act in the place of the tribe as incarnations of vengeance, taking the sin of retribution upon ourselves, so that only the hands of a few were bloodied, instead of the many.

Arwen’s frustration was not quite lost on the canine, despite how little understanding of empathy as Lili had – the whole slightly crushing her hand sort of tipped her off. And that little prayer again, huff… it just seemed a bit melodramatic to the would-be werewolf; whom was more accustomed to preparing for her kills by hitting them a lot with a bat instead. Well, whatever. At least she was kinda cute when she got angry… though Lili could smell just a tiny hint of blood in the air, immediately glancing towards the half-elf source. Ugh; more things to remind Lili of her hunger… Trying to ignore her tastes, the silver-haired girl leaned to the side in her seat; leaning her chin on her hand impatiently. If there were going to have so little information, they should have just sent them out with a file… ‘big with claws’, great! Whatever! She’d break it like anything else, right? They were just bigger humans… hrmph. Having tech-guy around again was a bit annoying, though; by the sound of things she might have to go a bit easy if they wanted to mess with the demon in whatever way they were babbling about. Oh well, at least she could talk about her gun some more! Arwen’s final note earned a near-silent sigh from Lili, utterly bemused by the naïve little half-elf. It was so cute! Frankly, Lili couldn’t imagine Arwen managing to do anything more with her fire magic than light a candle with this sort of attitude in mind. It was the sort of thing that had been a common joke amongst the German criminal circles back in Lili’s homeland; so pretentious! While it’d usually be annoying, from the blonde it just seemed cute… well, she’d leave the girl to her hopes; Lili would rather not let Arwen’s hands get dirty anyway. While she probably ought to ask a question or something, it really wasn’t the half-werewolf’s style; as one would imagine given her straight-forward nature. Besides, if they had so little information, then it wasn’t going to mean anything to ask anyway. This was just going to be: go there, hit this, hang around, and leave; right? Hopefully? Satisfied with her own approach, Lili just glanced around impatiently…

Robert D. Eichorn Eichorn paused as if trying to figure out what sort of valid and useful information he could give them. After a silent moment, he shrugged and then looked back at Edwin. "Unfortunately, no one stayed around to watch the Gate," he admitted nonchalantly, "I'm sure you know those daily warnings we still give the civvies about running the hell away when they see one? Yeah, that. The only reason why we know that there is a Gate is that a demon appeared, people report seeing it, and the T.A.M.R.D. agent we stationed there to keep an eye on it was eaten alive by the same culprit. All we know about the Gate is that if the demon appears, the Gate appears. Same with disappearing too. Not exactly the best kind of information, I know. But you guys will have to wing it somehow. Sorry."A mission that lacked substantially useful information, one that included a Gate and a demon. There is enough doubt that this mission is not going to go well. Nothing ever goes well when demons are involved. That itself was almost an unbreakable law,. Eichorn held on to his sleeved left forearm. His fingers tightened its grasp as if recollecting a horrid memory. But his own thoughts broke off as he heard Agent Arwen apologize. He merely nodded and said no more about it. It simply wasn't worth chastising her for not being ready for the horrors that this mission was going to present to them. "Preferably? Our researchers want it whole and I have a solid bet Mr. Melchiott would like that too, He paused and had an unpleasant, but resigned expression, "But if that's not possible, then at least try not to damage anything of interest on its body too much. However, the safety of the people is your highest priority."He started to walk towards the back of the room and start dismantling the cords from his laptop. "I'll be sure to keep watch on all of you via UAV," he then added, "So will that be all?"

Edwin's face fell as he heard the news - so what the boss was saying is that they had sweet nothing on any helpful information. "Fantastic." Edwin thought to himself. "Why not make this harder still?" It looked to be a trying day - but again, it had to happen eventually.
As he mentally grumbled, he turned his head towards Arwen and Lili. There was a fire in Arwen's eyes that he hadn't seen the last time they'd met - Edwin had perhaps underestimated her skills yet again. He was going to have to cut that out soon - it was turning into a bad habit, and Edwin did not like bad habits (at least, the ones that he wasn't comfortable with, anyway). When Arwen asked him about the demon, he just blinked. "The demon?" Edwin responded, confused. When did he mention the demon? "I care about information from the Gate. You can headbutt the demon 'til it's a pile of ash for all I give a damn." he responded, dismissively.
Though shortly afterwards, the boss himself claimed that the researchers wanted it whole. "Nobody told me about this." Edwin thought to himself. "Did they just assume I'd do it or is the TAMRD just messing with me?" It wouldn't be the first time. Otherwise why would they send the guy who was glorified IT support? The guy to do the jobs nobody wanted - the proverbial janitor of the TAMRD.
It didn't help matters much that survival of the Gate depended upon survival of the demon - which meant that he had to figure out how to get his information quickly, because nobody was going to just let him do his job peacefully. And he never liked 'winging' jobs, as Eichorn so gracefully put it. But in any case, as far as he was told, survival of any reasonable part of the demon came second. He was going to do his job, not start trying to chain a goddamn demon - leave that to the people who enjoyed hitting things with other things.
"So, limited information, a trigger-happy party, a demon of all but completely unknown ability and no plan. How could this possibly go wrong?" Edwin thought to himself. Not much he could say to control a bunch of soldiers, though, so he just leant back in his chair. As far as he could tell, the meeting was over unless someone else had anything to say.
